Shed questions
Do I need approval for a shed?
In Queensland, usually yes. A shed avoids building approval only if its plan area is 10 m² or less, it is no more than 2.4 m high (mean height 2.1 m) and no side exceeds 5 m, and that exemption does not apply in the cyclonic Wind Region C. On farming land, a Class 10 building more than 200 m from every road and boundary is exempt. Council planning rules can apply separately.
Can BWG Sheds help with council approval?
Yes. We prepare the site plan, drawings, engineering and specifications, and coordinate the application with a building certifier and, where its planning scheme requires it, your council. The certifier and council make the decisions.
Do you supply DIY shed kits?
Yes. Steel shed, garage, workshop and farm shed kits are designed to your size and options, engineered for your site, and delivered in our Queensland service areas with assembly plans and phone support.
Can you build the shed for me?
Yes. We supply and install sheds under Builtwise Group Pty Ltd's QBCC licence 15445275 (Builder – Open).
Can I customise the shed?
Yes. Span, length, eave height, roof pitch, bay spacing, doors, windows, open bays, awnings, insulation and colours are chosen for your project.
What size shed should I choose?
Work from the largest thing going inside, then add clearance and working space. For garages, the Queensland Housing Code minimum for a double is 5.5 m by 6 m internally; most owners want more. Our sizing guide covers cars, caravans, boats and machinery.
Do you build farm sheds?
Yes: machinery, equipment, hay and general farm sheds, open-bay or enclosed. Note that owner-builders can't build farm buildings in Queensland, and farm buildings valued over $27,500 must be built by a licensed contractor.
Do you service my area?
We service South East Queensland, the Darling Downs, Wide Bay and the Gladstone region. The Service Areas page lists every region and town. If your town isn't listed, call us on 07 5466 5858 and we'll tell you straight.
Do you provide engineering?
Yes. Every shed is engineered for its site: the wind region, terrain and shielding, and the ground it sits on. The engineering documentation goes with the approval application.
Do you deliver shed kits?
Yes, to sites in our Queensland service areas. Delivery is quoted for your address, so tell us about site access when you ask for a quote.
Can I use my own builder?
Yes. Many customers buy a kit and have their own builder or erector put it up. For work valued over $3,300, the person doing it generally needs the appropriate QBCC licence.
Can I add roller doors and windows?
Yes. Roller doors, personal access doors, windows, skylights, open bays, awnings and insulation are all options.
What information do you need for a quote?
The site postcode and suburb, the type of shed and what it's for, rough dimensions if you know them, doors and options, whether the site is ready, whether you want help with approval, and your timing. Photos of the site help.
Do you publish prices?
No. Shed prices depend on size, wind rating, site, doors, delivery distance and whether you want a kit or supply and install, so we quote each project. Our cost guide explains what moves the price.
